<p><font size="4"><strong><font color="#010c35">To go further… What is the analysis of hyperspectral or multispectral images and how is Machine Learning interesting in the processing of these images?</font></strong></font></p>



<p>A hyperspectral (or multispectral) imager is an imaging system for acquiring images in which each pixel contains data representing a broad electromagnetic spectrum (for example near infrared, infrared, Raman spectrum). Unlike traditional imaging which records only three spectral bands (red, green and blue) and only allows spatial analysis of colour, hyperspectral imaging records hundreds of spectroscopic wavelengths, allowing chemical analysis of products. This is why hyperspectral imaging is also called chemical imaging.</p>



<p>So, if you want to collect the same chemical information as that of a near-infrared spectrometer but spatialized, then a near-infrared hyperspectral imager is the suitable sensor! Because it makes it possible to obtain spatial chemical information, which is very useful in the case of heterogeneous samples (heterogeneous solid samples, powders, mixtures, etc.).</p>



<p></p>



<p>This technique finds applications in many industrial fields such as agriculture, the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, remote sensing, and scientific research. For example, in agriculture, hyperspectral image analysis can detect crop diseases, optimize fertilizer use, and monitor plant growth. In the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in the quality control of raw materials and finished products, hyperspectral imaging makes it possible to characterize the homogeneity of powders and detect the presence of agglomerates, verify the integrity of lyophilisates of biotechnology products, prove the tablet compliance. In the field of environmental monitoring and remote sensing, it can detect and monitor water, air and soil pollution.</p>



<p>Hyperspectral image analysis has many advantages over traditional imaging techniques. It allows more precise identification of products based on their chemical composition, better discrimination between visually similar products, and more sensitive detection to subtle changes such as particle size or molecular composition. However, manually analyzing these images can be time-consuming and tedious, requires extensive expertise and is sometimes simply impossible! This is where chemometric methods and Machine Learning applied to spectroscopy and imaging come in to enable this analysis and provide classification results (e.g., compliant or non-compliant tablet) or quantification results (e.g. example, the distribution of sugar concentration in the grains of a bunch of grapes).</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Proof of Concept using <strong>handheld NIR</strong> (Near Infrared) instruments for raw material quality control in winemaking, by measuring pectin content in an enzymatic process</li><li>Implementation of several ML predictive models aiming at <strong>real-time in-process control </strong>for a polymer Green Chemistry process.</li></ul>

<p><strong>Tom Fearn, from UCL – London’s Global University,UK</strong></p>



<p>Tom Fearn is Professor of Applied Statistics in the Department of Statistical Science at UCL in London. His main research area is chemometrics, and in particular its applications to quantitative calibration and classification problems in NIR spectroscopy. He received the Tomas Hirschfeld award for contributions to NIRS in 2001 and is Immediate Past President of the International Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy.</p>

<p><strong><strong>Federico Marini, from La Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy</strong></strong></p>



<p>Prof. Marini completed his PhD in 2004. In 2006, he was awarded the Young Researcher Prize from Italian Chemical Society and in 2012 he won the Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems Award “for his achievements in chemometrics”. His research activity is focused on all aspects of chemometrics, ranging from the application of existing methods to real world problems in different fields to the design and development of novel algorithms. He is the past-coordinator of the Chemometric group of the Italian Chemical Society, and currently the vice-president of Italian NIR society and the coordinator of the Chemometric study group of EUCheMS.</p>

<p>Marina Cocchi is at present Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. She got the PhD degree in Chemical Sciences in 1992 at the same University. Author of more than 100 publications on International Journals and books (H-ind 27, 2246 cit., Scopus). Main research topics: Multivariate, Multi-way and Multiset methods; Data Fusion; Feature selection; MSPC; Food Authenticity; Chemical fingerprinting by spectroscopy (MIR, NIR, NMR) and chromatography; Multivariate calibration; Experimental Design. She is member of editorial Board Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems, and of Advisory Board of Comprehensive Chemometrics, Wiley, 2nd Ed.</p>

<p><strong><strong><strong><strong>Jean Michel Roger from INRAE, France</strong></strong></strong></strong></p>



<p>Jean-Michel Roger&nbsp;focused is research on the robustness problem. In 2003,&nbsp;simultaneously with Prof. Tom Fearn, he proposed a new generic method called External Parameter Orthogonalization (EPO) which permits to eliminate specific spectral effects from the NIRS calibration and thus to&nbsp;solve certain problems of robustness.&nbsp; He is also involved in the design of portable or online spectrometers using filters technology. In this aim,&nbsp;he developed a method (CovSel) that allows to select wavelengths with regard to multiple responses. He has created ChemHouse, a chemometrics research group, forge of the ChemFlow software (see <a href="https://chemproject.org">https://chemproject.org</a>).</p>

<p>Matthieu Lesnoff is biometrician at the Selmet (Mediterranean and tropical livestock farming systems) research unit in CIRAD. In chemometrics, he specializes in non-linear prediction methods, in particular on locally weighted PLSR approaches. He is actually in charge of developing a web platform for automated predictions of the composition of tropical forage compositions in CIRAD. He is member of the ChemHouse research group in Montpellier (<a href="https://chemproject.org">https://chemproject.org</a>) and has developed several chemometrics free packages in R and Julia languages (rchemo and Jchemo: <a href="https://github.com/mlesnoff">https://github.com/mlesnoff</a> ).</p>

<p>In the frame of the Projet Call &#8220;<strong>Biomedicine: improving yields and control production costs</strong>&#8221; of the <strong>Grand Défi Bioproduction</strong>, the <span style="color:#00646f" class="has-inline-color"><strong>ACCESS</strong> </span>(<span style="color:#00646f" class="has-inline-color"><strong>Advanced Cell Control by Spectroscopic Sensors</strong></span>) R&amp;D project, received a favorable funding from BPI France to meet the societal challenge of producing <strong>Innovative Therapy Medicines </strong>at lower costs.</p>

<p>The <strong><span style="color:#00646f" class="has-inline-color">ACCESS </span></strong>project aims to optimize <strong>Mesenchymal Stem Cell</strong> (<strong>MSC</strong>) cultures in a bioreactor through on-line production control, based on innovative in-line optical sensors, <strong>Machine Learning</strong> algorithms and automated real-time feedback coupled with a <strong>digital twin </strong>and a <strong>Quality-by-Design</strong> (<strong>QbD</strong>) approach for process modeling.</p>

<p>The consortium of this collaborative project is composed of the integrator <strong>MTInov </strong>and 5 complementary partners: <strong>INDATECH &#8211; Chauvin Arnoux group</strong>, <strong><span style="color:#00646f" class="has-inline-color">Ondalys</span></strong>, <strong>Cybernano</strong>, <strong>Ypso Facto </strong>and <strong>StemInov</strong>.</p>



<p>This project will make it possible <strong>to structure an integrated French QbD / PAT offer with European influence for the control of all types of adherent cell cultures in biotechnology</strong>, thanks to suppliers of complementary products and services, ranging from process modeling (Ypso Facto, Cybernano ) up to the industrial implementation of online control (INDATECH, Ondalys, Cybernano).</p>

<p>Each year, this congress focuses on <strong>data analysis</strong> and <strong>modeling </strong>issues as well as on <strong>design of experiments </strong>(DoE) methods. </p>

<p>This year, the conference is organized in Brest by the <strong>University of Western Brittany</strong>, with the participation of students from the CACQ-OPEX master&#8217;s degree (Analytical Chemistry, Chemometrics and Quality)</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">BPI France validated the funding of CLIMBIN,  a 2.2 M€ project, in which Ondalys is partner.</h2>

<p>As part of the French Project Call &#8220;Grand Défi Biomédicaments&#8221; CLIMBIN, a collaborative R&amp;D project, obtained funding from BPI France to meet the societal challenge of producing new biotherapies and production tools.</p>



<p>CLIMBIN aims to develop an innovative process analytical control solution that addresses the issue of optimizing and automating cell culture systems, in USP (upstream process) and DSP (downstream process). This solution will allow CDMOs (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) to reduce their production times and costs and thus make therapeutic products accessible to the greatest number of patients.</p>



<p>This collaborative project is carried out by the <strong>NMNS </strong>laboratory -of the University of Tours, the <strong>LRGP </strong>laboratory of the University of Lorraine / CNRS, the<strong> Bio3</strong> of the University of Tours (IMT Group), <strong><span style="color:#00646f" class="has-inline-color">Ondalys</span></strong>, <strong>INDATECH </strong>&#8211; Chauvin Arnoux Group, and the Servier pharmaceutical group.</p>



<p>This project provides for the hiring of around ten people in R&amp;D, design and services.</p>



<p>The development of biotherapies (recombinant proteins, antibodies, vaccines) and drugs for innovative therapy (drugs for gene therapy, drugs for somatic cell therapy, drugs from cell or tissue engineering, combined drugs for innovative therapy) is a real opportunity to better care for patients.</p>
